Preparing for Your PhD Viva/Defense
The viva is your opportunity to demonstrate mastery of your research. Preparation builds confidence.
Reread your thesis thoroughly. Know every section, every argument, every citation.
Prepare for common questions: Why this topic? What's your contribution? What would you do differently?
Anticipate weaknesses. Examiners will probe limitations. Have thoughtful responses ready.
Practice with mock vivas. Have colleagues or supervisors question you.
Prepare your opening statement - a brief summary of your thesis and contribution.
On the day: take your time, ask for clarification if needed, and engage in scholarly discussion.
